Understanding your results

Maximum recording: 30 seconds. Audio stays in this browser and is never uploaded.

Check your microphone before a call

This online mic test lets you see whether the browser receives a signal and hear a short recording. Choose the microphone in your system or browser settings, start the test and speak in a normal voice. The moving meter shows the received signal; it is not a calibrated loudness reading or a professional quality score.

Record, replay and download locally

Recording starts with the test when your browser supports it and stops after a maximum of 30 seconds or when you press Stop. Listen back to check whether your voice is present and understandable. You can download the actual browser recording format or delete the in-page sample. The recording stays in browser memory and is never uploaded by this tool. A file you download is then under your control.

Microphone not working or permission denied?

Allow microphone access for this site when prompted. If it was previously blocked, update the browser’s site permissions and try again. Check the operating system’s microphone privacy settings and input selection, and close another app that may be occupying the device. Bluetooth headsets can use different input and output modes. If you can record but cannot hear playback, also run the speaker test. More steps are available in Audio Troubleshooter.

Questions, answered

Can I export MP3?

The recording format depends on your browser. The download uses the real recorded format, usually WebM, Ogg or M4A.

Why does the meter move but my recording sound quiet?

The meter reflects the received signal, while playback also depends on output volume. Check input level, microphone distance and playback output before repeating at normal speaking volume.

Can I use this mic test without recording?

If recording is unsupported, the tool can still show the incoming signal where microphone access is supported. On supported browsers the test records locally; delete the sample when finished.
