Frequency sweep

The sweep changes frequency exponentially. Device output and hearing vary; inaudibility is not a diagnosis.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose a frequency between 20 and 20,000 Hz, a waveform and a duration.
  2. Start quietly. Use Stop at any time. Device limits may make some tones inaudible.
  3. For a sweep, choose the starting frequency, ending frequency and duration. The progression is exponential.

Understanding your results

The sweep changes frequency exponentially. Device output and hearing vary; inaudibility is not a diagnosis.

Frequency, waveform and duration

The frequency control sets pitch in hertz, from 20 to 20,000 Hz within the browser’s supported range. Duration limits playback to 1–120 seconds. Sine is a single-frequency waveform; square, triangle and sawtooth contain additional harmonics and can sound brighter at the same selected frequency. Start quietly and compare one setting at a time.

How a frequency sweep works

Set a start frequency, an end frequency and a duration, then choose Play sweep. The pitch changes exponentially between the endpoints, so equal time intervals cover equal frequency ratios. You can sweep upward or downward. Stop at any time. If the output sounds distorted, lower the level rather than extending the test.

Interpreting tones responsibly

A phone, speaker, headphone or browser may reproduce some frequencies poorly or not at all. Room acoustics and hearing also influence what you notice. An inaudible tone is not a reason to raise volume sharply, and this is not a hearing test or a calibrated frequency-response measurement. For channel routing use Speaker Test; for a connection problem use Audio Troubleshooter.

Questions, answered

Why can I not hear every frequency?

Your speaker, headphones and hearing have different limits. This tool is not a hearing test and cannot diagnose a device.

Is a 440 Hz tone the same as a 440 Hz square wave?

They have the same selected fundamental frequency, but a square wave includes harmonics. Their tone color and perceived loudness can therefore differ.

Can this tone generator diagnose hearing loss?

No. The playback level and hardware are not calibrated for a hearing examination. Do not use the results to make a health diagnosis.
